About the role

Location: Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastern Road, Brighton, BN2 5BE, UK

Seeking a Clinical Support Worker to join the Sexual Health and Contraception Service at University Hospitals Sussex. The role offers flexible working patterns, including full‑time, part‑time and job‑share options, with required evening and weekend shifts. Training will be provided to develop competence in sexual health care.

Duties:

  • Deliver planned, high quality nursing care supporting sexual health and contraception needs.
  • Perform venepuncture, assist with intimate genital examinations, specimen collection, and contraception care.
  • Act as a chaperone and conduct diagnostic microscopy.
  • Facilitate asymptomatic patient pathways and provide health promotion including C‑Card and condom provision.
  • Record patient observations (blood pressure, weight, height) and discuss sexual health.
  • Prepare clinical areas and assist with genital biopsy, Horizon, IUD/IUS and implant clinics.
  • Work across hub and spoke sites in Brighton and Hove, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

  • NHS or NHS primary care experience, or recent acute NHS Trust experience for internationally educated professionals.
  • Care Certificate from an Ofqual regulated awarding organisation.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills acquisition at vocational qualification level 3.
  • Experience working autonomously and managing own workload.
  • Good interpersonal and people skills; ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate activities to new/junior staff.
  • Good written and spoken English, legible handwriting, accurate documentation.
  • Computer/keyboard skills sufficient for email and electronic patient records.
  • Non‑judgemental attitude and maturity to discuss sexual health matters.
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Work within codes of practice and professional standards.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion commitment.
  • Willingness to undergo DBS check.
  • Level 3 Diploma or apprenticeship in Clinical Healthcare Support or related field (desirable).
  • Maths GCSE (grade C/4+) or functional skills (desirable).
  • English GCSE (grade C/4+) or functional skills (desirable).
  • Venepuncture and diagnostic microscopy experience (desirable).
  • Experience in sexual health and contraception setting (desirable).
  • People management and development experience (desirable).
  • Experience supporting new HCAs and mentoring (desirable).
  • Knowledge of inner‑city healthcare (desirable).
  • Freedom to Act qualification (desirable).
  • Mentoring or teaching qualification (desirable).
  • Competent to chaperone during intimate examinations (desirable).
