Carer Peer Support Specialist
Location: East Brighton Community Mental Health Centre, Brighton General Hospital, Elm Grove, Brighton, BN2 3EW, UK
Seeking a Carer Peer Support Specialist to work with the Specialist Older Adults Mental Health Service based at the East Brighton Community Mental Health Centre. The role provides information and support to unpaid carers of older adults with mental health needs or dementia, helping them navigate the mental health system and collaborate with clinical teams. Operating within a Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm service, specific working patterns can be negotiated.
Duties:
- Supporting family and friend carers directly and providing useful information about mental health
- Building support networks for carers and developing links across other supporting organisations
- Working with the clinical team to build collaborative alliances with carers who may be struggling
- Acting as a coach and mentor to carers by providing information, advice, and signposting to services
- Contributing to service development by ensuring the carer voice is always represented
Requirements:
- Health care or relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent skills acquired through experience
- Recognised Peer Support qualification (e.g. Level 3 Certificate in Peer Support Work) or an in-depth understanding of a peer support approach
- Lived experience as a family member or carer for someone with severe mental illness
- Knowledge of the mental health system and carers support services
- Ability to travel, preferably with ability to drive using own transport
