Debate Performance Coach
Location: Brighton, UK
Seeking a Debate Performance Coach on a permanent part-time contract to start in October 2026. The role involves further developing and enhancing the College's Debate Society, working Thursdays for a maximum of five hours between 12.00pm - 6.00pm during term-time (33 weeks). Offers an exciting opportunity to coach one of the College's largest pupil activities.
Duties:
- Preparing for and delivering a 90-minute workshop session between 4.00pm-5.30pm on Thursdays
- Working with small groups of pupils throughout Thursday afternoon to develop their skills
- Creating and distributing resources such as PowerPoints and case files for pupil reference
- Assisting the Head of Debate in selecting teams for competitions
- Assisting the Head of Debate in organising the Brighton College Schools’ Competition
- Accompanying pupils to debate competitions across the UK and providing feedback where appropriate
- Organising and overseeing other debating events, such as internal tournaments or spars with other schools
Requirements:
- Strong British Parliamentary speaking CV, ideally with successful experience at major international competitions or equivalent high-level achievement
- Ability to create an engaged and supportive atmosphere in the classroom
- Ability to take initiative, be well organised, and work independently
- Passionate about helping young people develop as debaters, including providing support outside of sessions
- Prior experience coaching at school or university level is desirable
- Availability during term-time weekends to accompany teams to competitions where needed is desirable
- High-level judging CV and an understanding of how to develop pupils' judging is desirable
- Experience of convening competitions is desirable
