Night Receptionist
About the role
Location: George Williams Centre, Brighton, UK
Seeking a Night Receptionist to work Thursday to Saturday nights from 9:30 pm to 8:00 am, totaling 31.5 hrs/week. The role involves overseeing safety and security, assisting clients throughout the night, and maintaining the reception area. The position is based at the George Williams Centre in Brighton.
Duties:
- First point of contact for clients, assisting with enquiries or problems during the night.
- Manage challenging situations calmly, seeking on‑call staff or emergency services when necessary.
- Patrol the building periodically to identify hazards and ensure safety, security and cleanliness.
- Log repairs and escalate health, safety or security issues to day staff.
- Welcome clients at reception and represent YMCA Brighton.
- Respond decisively to customer complaints and disputes, escalating as required.
- Operate equipment such as computer, intercom, door entry system, telephone, walkie‑talkies and drinks machine.
- Enforce visitor policies to exclude non‑clients from the building.
- Encourage clients to adhere to policies on alcohol, noise, visitors and disturbance.
- Offer support to clients with problems throughout the night, seeking assistance when needed.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks to meet clients’ night‑time needs.
- Report concerns related to safeguarding, health and safety, security or client well‑being using proper procedures.
- Follow safeguarding protocols at all times.
- Adhere to YMCA Brighton’s policies, including EDI, health and safety, GDPR and confidentiality.
- Observe the Code of Conduct for staff professionalism.
- Attend meetings and supervision outside normal hours with compensatory time off.
- Complete required training both face‑to‑face and online.
- Complete end‑of‑shift log notes, incident reports and maintain accurate records.
- Keep the reception area clean.
- Undertake any other duties directed within the scope of the role.
Requirements:
- Basic understanding of support needs of adults at risk.
- Good knowledge of safeguarding procedures for vulnerable adults.
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
- Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and solution‑focused.
- Clear verbal and written communication for accurate record‑keeping.
- Excellent record‑keeping and report‑writing skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office 365 and client data management systems (training provided).
- Ability to work as part of a team and use own initiative.
- Understanding of confidentiality, GDPR and data governance.
- Desirable: experience in supported housing or similar services for adults at risk.
- Desirable: prior experience of night work/unsociable hours.
- Desirable: understanding of trauma impact and strengths‑based approach.
- Desirable: confidence in recording notes, incident forms and health‑and‑safety checklists.
